Tennessee Republican Senator Lamar Alexander hope President Trump changes his mind on tariff plan.
Starting at midnight Friday, the U.S. imposed tariffs on nearly all imported steel and aluminum. Senator Alexander says the President's tariff approach is an abuse of power.
"What I have urged the president to do instead is to focus on reciprocity. Say to the other countries: do for us, what we do for you. But don't use tariffs. Tariffs are just a tax on the American people that destroys jobs, and I'm hopeful he'll change his mind and move to a different approach," said Sen. Alexander.
The Senator says the tariffs especially hurt Tennesseans because its effect on the auto industry. One-third of manufacturing jobs here in Tennessee are auto jobs.
