NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Sen. Rand Paul underwent surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center over the weekend.

Sen. Paul tweeted Monday morning that he had to have a portion of his lung removed after he was assaulted by a neighbor in 2017.

Paul said he will limit his activities in August but should be able to return to the Senate in September.

The Kentucky Republican was attacked in November 2017 while mowing his lawn at his home. A friend of Paul's said the senator had gotten off his riding mower to remove a limb when he was tackled from behind.

Rene Boucher pleaded guilty to assaulting a member of Congress and was sentenced to 30 days in prison.
