MADISON, Tenn. - Service members of the U.S. military took a long stand for a cause very close to them.

Members from each branch of the military stood at attention all day Saturday at the Rivergate Mall as part of the "Stand At Attention" event to benefit the "Active Heroes" charity.

The service members participated in a competition to see who could hold their post the longest while taking donations.

The charity's goal has been to raise awareness about PTSD and help prevent veteran suicides.

“Right now the statistic is we lose 22 veterans to suicide a day, and even one suicide is too many,” said Heather Lucas, the competition coordinator.

The charity group has been building a military family retreat to support veterans struggling with PTSD.
