Shelbyville Flume Repair Suffers Set Back

Posted

A massive repair project in the mid-state has suffered another setback, after heavy rains pounded the area for days.

It happened in Shelbyville over the weekend, as crews are trying to replace a giant storm water drain that's collapsed several times this year.

City officials say those rains caused a nearby storm water line to give out, and backflow from the nearby Duck River compounded the problem, causing water to fill up a trench the flume was sitting in as it was being repaired.

That, in turn, caused a 200 to 300 foot section of the flume to rise up two to three feet.

Wednesday, water pumps were hard at work, making sure the flume was clear of water, but officials say  it may be Friday before they can figure out how much damage was done.

They say they'll have to completely remove the section of the flume that was affected by the rain, and make sure the ground underneath it is stable.

Crews say while they had hoped to have the flume replacement done by Christmas, now they say this delay could push back the project until the end of January, as the city says it now has to take on the extra cost of this latest flume failure.
