NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Residents at a Madison apartment complex woke up to find a mess after at least 20 cars were broken into overnight.

Officers with Metro Nashville police were called to the Breckenridge Apartments around 1 a.m. Wednesday.

Resident Tyler Evatt said while it doesn't look like they took anything, this is the third time he's dealt with a break-in.

“You don't think it’s going to happen to you until it happens,” he said. “’Why did this happen, how did we let this happen’ you star questioning things.”

Evatt was leaving his friend's apartment in Madison around 1 a.m. Wednesday and found the driver's side window smashed in. It turned out he was just one of at least 17 people burglars targeted.

For all of these smash and grabs, the thieves forced their way in, but Metro Police say that's not the norm. Fifty-eight percent of cars stolen the first week of January were easy targets because keys were available.

Even though Tyler says they didn't take anything, he's just frustrated dealing with a car break-in for the third time.

"It sucks man. You know, people work hard for their stuff. I work hard. I get up every day, six days a week sometimes. It's not that hard. You can find a job. It's Nashville. There's jobs all over the place," he said.

Metro Police said they think a group of teenagers using flashlights to smash in the windows is responsible.
