NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Some Christmas-lovers are getting a head start on their shopping this year, and stores are encouraging it due to the pandemic.

Since 1946, Phillips Toy Mart has been serving up Christmas smiles.

"I was up 17% last month over last year, and I think a fair chunk of it is people buying a little early for Christmas, which we’re certainly encouraging them to do," said Co-owner Powell Phillips.

Phillips said he already stocked up on toys, games, and stocking stuffers for the holiday season.

"It’s the smart thing to do quite frankly because we don’t know what’s going to happen, there could be another round," Phillips said. "And more shut down type stuff and hopefully not, and it’s not looking like it’s going to be too bad, but you just don’t know "

In the clothing world, they're seeing some earlier-than-usual shoppers too. Rose Stewart said, "I saw the other day that October is the new December, and that kind of stuck with me cause I’m like if they start shopping now, there will be less crowds in November December. It's safer to shop with less people around due to COVID-19."

At the Posh Boutique in Hillsboro Village, they're taking safety precautions seriously. “We’re still doing the curbside pickup and stuff like that, so hopefully we can boost our online sales for the holiday season," Stewart said.

During the original shutdown, the supply chain was a roller coaster, but it's working itself out. "Men’s clothing has been harder to get for some reason, but anytime I see Lysol wipes or anything at the store, I’ll grab it," Stewart said.

In most cases, stores have been able to restock their inventory.

"We’re excited. We’re ready for the holiday season, so hopefully it’s good and we can finish strong," Stewart said.

Target, Macy's, and Best Buy have launched sales prior to Black Friday to encourage early Christmas shopping in some places. Amazon had their prime day with deals in October as well.
