NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Some of Music City's younger residents got a special treat from a group that's hoping to expand the love for reading.
Monday, Elijah's Heart hosted an event at Sudekum Apartments where they gave out books to children in the public housing community.
Employees from Home Depot were also on-hand building and staining bookshelves to house their new libraries.
Those with Elijah's Heart said they hope bringing books to these children will accomplish much more than giving them new reading material.
"Functional Illiteracy - a child going to school and not learning to read very well is great in our country,” said Joe “Papa Joe” Bradford, of Elijah’s Heart. “So, we're trying to combat that, to break the cycle of poverty."
Monday's event was a joint effort by Elijah's Heart and MDHA as part of their Literacy Awareness Campaign.
