Springfield Police Looking For Teen Burglary Suspect

Springfield police have been trying to track down a teenager accused of breaking into area homes.

Police records listed 19-year-old Nicholas Cage Mathis as homeless.

Authorities said he’s wanted for breaking into at least two different homes and dropping some important belongings at the scene.

He was identified through his cell phone and his wallet with his driver's license inside after he allegedly dropped them while running away from two break-ins.

"Most people don't break into occupied houses," said Chief David Thompson. "That was the opposite. Most burglars make sure the houses are empty, but in this case he broke into a house that was occupied."

A Springfield man noticed an intruder inside his Kemper Court home in the middle of the night last Friday after his daughter alerted him that there may be a burglar.

Mathis allegedly told the homeowner his mother kicked him out of the house, and he was cold. The homeowner held Mathis at gunpoint but he was able to get away before police arrived.

"Sometimes it's not just dumb. Sometimes it's a matter of, 'Oh my God, he has a gun. I need to get out of here before he kills me,'" Chief Thompson said.

That same day, a nearby home on Fairway Trail was broken into and $1,000 was stolen.

If you see Mathis, call the Springfield Police Department.
