A star baseball player, who earned a name for himself during the Little League World Series, was injured in a shooting.
Baseball season hadn't even begun, but Coach Randy Harrell was dealing with a roster, that was a man short after standout player, Lorenzo Butler, was shot last week.
"The news is tragic and devastating, our team is very worried about him, I'm worried about him," the Hillwood High School boys baseball coach said.
On Wednesday, Butler was with some friends near 16th Avenue North in Nashville. Lorenzo told police that he got into a fight and that's when the 16-year-old claims a gun was pulled on him.
He told police that as he tried to wrestle it away he was shot once in the leg. Lorenzo then admitted to taking the gun and firing until it was empty.
Police haven't determined how the baseball player was shot or by whom, and were working to determine exactly what may have happened.
"It was just like one of my children being shot," Coach Harrell said
The star baseball player, who became a household name during the 2012 Little League World Series was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center. It's unclear how his injury might impact his ability to play high school ball this season.
"We're just gonna keep our hearts and minds open, a lot of prayers and hopes that he recovers and gets back on this baseball diamond he really loves," Harrell added.
Friends have setup a gofundme to help Lorenzo with his medical bills.
