Memphis Council Approves $2M For Police Cams

Posted

The Memphis City Council has approved adding $2 million to the budget this fiscal year to store police body and in-car camera video.

Media outlets reported Tuesday the council approved money that will be paid to body camera supplier Taser International.

Video storage and policies have been two of the issues that led Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland to put an indefinite hold on the rollout of 1,700 body cameras in January.

Police Interim Director Mike Rallings said he doesn't know yet when the rollout of the cameras will happen. The city has been outfitting 30 squad cars a month with in-car cameras, and hopes to have 400 outfitted by the end of the year. Memphis currently has three officers outfitted with body cameras, and 150 squad cars with in-car cameras.
