NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — A Storm 5 Alert was issued for Wednesday afternoon and evening due to the threat for wintry weather during the evening commute.

Widespread rain will spread across the area tonight and throughout the morning hours Wednesday. Temperatures will be in the high 40s near the 50s for most of the morning and early afternoon.

However, Wednesday evening, a cold front will slam temps down into the 20s and as the cold air rushes in, we may see a brief wintry mix mainly along and North of Interstate 40.

A wind advisory is in effect for Middle Tennessee through 3 p.m. and our Kentucky counties through 9 a.m. Very strong southerly wind will be sustained between 20-30mph with gusts as high as 40-50mph during the overnight hours.

The best chance for snowflakes will be between 5 p.m. and midnight Wednesday with only minor accumulations (a dusting) expected. Heavy rain will cause most of it to melt initially. However as temperatures tumble into the 20s Thursday morning it's possible some of the residual moisture may freeze leading to patchy slick spots.
