NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A two-mile stretch of Interstate 40 will be closed on the west side of downtown Nashville as Tennessee Department of Transportation crews continue the second phase of the Fast Fix 8 project.

The closures will begin Friday at 8 p.m. and last through 6 a.m. Monday. I-40 will be closed from the I-40/I-65 split as part of the project to repair four twin bridges. Jo Johnston Avenue will be also closed from 11th Avenue to 16th Avenue.

Over the weekend, there will be no on or off-ramp access at Demonbreun Street, Broadway, Church Street or Charlotte Avenue. The ramp to I-40 West from 2nd and 4th Avenue will also be closed.

TDOT said east and westbound traffic will be detoured while crews remove and replace the I-40 eastbound bridge over Jo Johnston Avenue.

The closures are expected to impact traffic this weekend as concert goers attend shows at Bridgestone Arena, the Ryman Auditorium and the new Ascend Amphitheater. Eric Church, Dolly Parton, Shania Twain and The Monkees are all playing downtown Friday night.

Additionally, the Nashville Sounds are scheduled to play Iowa at First Tennessee Park at 7:05 p.m.

Drivers are encouraged to allow plenty of time and plan on seeking alternate routes. From I-24, motorists can exit the interstate at Shelby Avenue, James Robertson Parkway and Jefferson Street, take I-65 at Wedgewood Avenue or Metro Center to the north to get downtown.

Metro police suggested the following routes:

  • Traffic headed west on Demonbreun Street will be turned south on 8th Avenue/Rosa L. Parks Blvd. At the roundabout, motorists will be able to travel south on 8th Avenue (to the Wedgewood I-65 exchange), southeast on Lafayette (to the Murfreesboro Pike I-24 exchange) or east on Korean Veterans Boulevard (to the Shelby I-65 exchange).
  • On Broadway, all westbound traffic on Broadway will be turned north on 8th Avenue/ Rosa L. Parks Blvd. They can then access I-24 at the James Robertson Parkway exchange, I-65 at MetroCenter, or proceed westbound on Church Street or Charlotte Avenue.
  • For the Sounds game Friday night, additional officers will be assigned to the Jefferson Street, Cowan Street and North 1st Street area to assist motorists in accessing I-24 at Jefferson Street.
