The TBI said Fairview officers shot and killed 50-year-old Jeffory Hughes while responding to a disturbance. According to investigators, he came outside and confronted two officers.
TBI spokesperson Susan Niland said Hughes was armed with a handgun and refused verbal commands to drop the weapon.
At one point, one officer deployed a taser but that proved to be ineffective. Officials said he drew his weapon, at which point at least one officer opened fire.
Neither officer was hurt. Their names were not immediately released.
The TBI was handling the investigation.
