SPARTA, Tenn. (WTVF) — The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has been called to White County after a man died while in custody.

TBI agents confirmed the death of 34-year-old Mauris Crespos on Thursday, saying District Attorney General Bryant Dunaway requested their assistance in the investigation.

The incident originated from a rollover crash in Dekalb County. A male passenger from the vehicle was later found just over the county line in White County.

Investigators said that initial reports indicate he started assaulting deputies when they tried to detain him.

A taser was reportedly deployed and the man was handcuffed and taken to jail.

When the officer arrived at the jail, the man was unresponsive. He was taken to a White County hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

His name was not immediately available. The investigation remains ongoing.
