Teachers from Neely's Bend Elementary School worked with Nashville firefighters to promote safety by handing out smoke detectors.

A Neely's Bend kindergarten student lost her life in a fire in December; so the educators decided to turn the tragedy into an opportunity to save lives.

The group delivered about 150 smoke detectors to homes in the Cheyenne Boulevard area.

Fire officials said the fire in December also killed the child's father and a second child. They said the cause was electrical.
