NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — The Tennessee National Guard is sending troops to Washington, D.C. amid the ongoing protests following the death of George Floyd.

Major General Jeffrey Holmes said the 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment out of Knoxville has begun the mobilization phase after getting the official call Tuesday morning.

Holmes said the troops are expected to be on the ground no later than Saturday. He did not provide any more specific information.

He said the deployment isn’t expected to impact guard’s current missions.
