FOREST VIEW, Ill. (AP) -- A semi driver from Tennessee faced a felony charge of driving while fatigued following a 12-vehicle crash on Interstate 55 in suburban Chicago.
Illinois State Police officials said 52-year-old Mark Tipton of Crossville, Tennessee, was set to appear in bond court Sunday.
Five people were taken to hospitals after the pre-dawn crash Friday. Another nine people were treated at the scene. None of the injuries was considered life-threatening.
Investigators said Tipton failed to stop, causing a pileup collision on a section of roadway where two northbound lanes were closed for construction. The ISP said Tipton reported he fell asleep just before the crash and he did not attempt to stop.
Authorities said Tipton faced other charges including violating truck driving rules and making a false report.
