NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Some Nashville businesses had to shut down for the week due to the presidential debate at Belmont University, but the rough week ended with a pleasant surprise for one bagel shop.
Proper Bagel hasn't been open all week because of road closures near the university, but the staff still got paid thanks to TikTok star Lexy Burke, who is known as "serial tipper.”
Since May, Burke has been surprising Nashville businesses with tips through Venmo. Due to her popularity on the social media site, she managed to collect $5,000 worth of tips and surprised the staff with cash.
The staff was very surprised and thankful, saying this kind gesture just means the world to them and says a lot about the community.
Over the weekend, a post from Proper Bagel went viral after their delivery trucks couldn't make it in because of the road closures.
"Belmont has no concept of what it takes to actually operate a restaurant where everything is made from scratch, daily - on the premises..." the bagel shop wrote in part.
The business went on to call Belmont "negligent" and "self-serving" for "displacing the business and staff during a pandemic."
A spokesperson for Belmont University later said the businesses could still be open to foot traffic, and they worked diligently to encourage debate workers to utilize them.
Proper Bagel will open back up Saturday at 8 a.m.
