An arrest has been made after a toddler was grazed in the face during what police called an “accidental” shooting at a residence in east Nashville.

The incident happened overnight Wednesday at a residence at James Cayce Homes.

A Metro Nashville police captained said the victim is a 1-year-old boy and they're treating this as an accidental shooting.

The child's father, 31-year-old Tommy Washington, was charged with child neglect and booked into jail.

Police said the father told them he had just placed the child into bed after his bath. The father’s handgun was apparently on the bed and he said he heard a gunshot after he left the room.

He tried to drive to TriStar Skyline Medical Center but had a flat tire on the way.

He drove to a Krystal fast food restaurant about three miles away and called for help.

First responders arrived on the scene and took the toddler to the hospital for treatment. His injuries were not life-threatening.
