Trailer Slams Into Low Train Overpass Downtown

A tractor trailer sustained damage when it passed under a low train overpass and slammed into the structure near the Gulch.

The crash happened Friday morning around 9 a.m. on 8th Avenue South near Gleaves Street. The semi was traveling north when the driver attempted to pass under the rail bridge.

Apparently the trailer was too high for the 12-foot 7-inch clearance, and it struck the bridge, sustaining severe damage. The top of the trailer was peeled off, and the back doors were ripped from the rest of the trailer.

Insulation and debris was scattered on the road under the bridge. It was not clear if the bridge sustained any damage.

The truck was hauling a small amount of refrigerated items.

Several emergency crews responded to the scene. Details on any injuries were not available.

The roadway on 8th Avenue South remained opened. Drexel Street was closed for a short time while emergency crews used the road as a staging area.

Officials did not say when they expected the scene to be cleared.

No one was injured.
