NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Tropical Storm Zeta formed in the Atlantic Sunday morning making it 2020's 27th named tropical storm of the season.
Zeta is strengthening as it gets ready to move over the Yucatan Peninsula. The National Hurricane Center has Zeta possibly becoming a category 1 hurricane by late Monday or Tuesday. The Gulf Coast has not been able to catch a break this year, with seven other named storms making landfall so far in 2020.
Right now, the latest forecast track for Zeta has the storm making landfall somewhere between Louisiana and the panhandle of Florida by late Wednesday night.
We will be watching the path of Zeta closely, as it could bring us rain and storm chances by mid-week. Right now Wednesday and Thursday look to be the wettest days with 1-3" of rain likely.
Meanwhile, this hurricane season has been historically active. The only other year the name "Zeta" was used was 2005.
For those counting, 2005 still holds the record for the most number of named storms in a season (28). NHC identified an "unnamed" subtropical storm in its post-season analysis that year, which is included in the total. With #Zeta, the number for 2020 currently stands at 27.

If we make it to our next name, "Eta," it would be the first time that name has been used during an Atlantic hurricane season.
