I-24 reopens in Rutherford County after two deadly crashes

SMYRNA, Tenn. (WTVF) — The Tennessee Highway Patrol investigated two deadly crashes early Thursday morning on I-24 in Rutherford County.

According to THP, a pedestrian was hit and killed by a driver in the westbound lanes near mile marker 71.

Troopers said a tractor-trailer was on the interstate when the pedestrian stepped out onto the road directly in the path of the commercial vehicle.

The driver was unable to avoid the woman and hit her.

A second crash was reported on the eastbound lanes of I-24 near mile marker 71. According to the THP, a driver crashed into a TDOT incident response vehicle. A person inside that car died at the scene.

Both directions of I-24 were shut down for the investigations and were closed for several hours.
