NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Two teens have been arrested following the theft of a Lexus sedan from a Nashville home earlier this month.
According to Metro police, an SUV backed into the driveway of a Banbury Station home May 19 just before 5 a.m. Two suspects got out of the SUV, and stole a garage door opener from an unlocked pickup truck parked in the driveway.
The suspects opened the home's garage to find a Lexus, with the keys to the Lexus hanging on a rack. They then stole the Lexus, driving away from the home.
Metro officers with the Juvenile Crime Task Force spotted the Lexus Monday evening as it was traveling east down Fairfield Avenue.
Officers attempted to stop the Lexus, but the 16-year-old driver refused to pull over, instead driving toward the interstate.
Other officers deployed a spike strip at the entrance to I-40. The Lexus continued a short distance on damaged tires before leaving I-40 at Fesslers Lane. The 16-year-old driver and his 17-year-old passenger bailed from the car while it was still moving.
After a brief chase on foot, the 17-year-old was arrested. A semi-automatic handgun stolen in Smyrna in 2017 was located along the 17-year-old's path.
The 16-year-old surrendered to a Metro police canine team after he was found hiding in a dumpster. Another loaded gun was found along his attempted escape path.
A third gun was found in the center console of the Lexus.
The 16-year-old - who has been arrested multiple times before - is charged with a second offense of unlawful gun possession, auto theft, felony evading arrest in a motor vehicle, gun theft and driving without a license.
The 17-year-old is charged with a second offense of unlawful gun possession, vehicle theft, gun theft and misdemeanor evading arrest.
Metro police urges everybody to lock their vehicles, even when parked at home in a driveway or garage.
