Vanderbilt Holds Discussion On Gitmo Plan

A discussion was held at Vanderbilt University on the plan to close the Guantanamo Bay Detention Center.

Two retired military officials weighed in on that question tonight at Vanderbilt Law School.

“I think it is the most humane, principled, detention facility on the face of the earth, and its reputation is the exact opposite,” said Bill Lietzau.

Lietzau worked during the Obama administration, and spoke Thursday night with Dr. Stephen Xenakis, a psychiatrist and advisor.

They both did work at Guantanamo Bay and agreed that eventually, it should close.

They added there are misconceptions about the facility, at least from their experiences.

“There are clearly people who are enemies of the country, and we need to be able to capture them and hold them, and that's different from the way we think of it as a prison. I think we have to clear that up,” said Xenakis.

The President's plan to close the facility has faced a lot of opposition.

For instance, Presidential candidate Ted Cruz said we shouldn't close Gitmo, we should expand it.
