NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Metro Nashville Police officials say a Vanderbilt University graduate student was hit and killed by a dump truck while crossing the street in Nashville's West End.

Police say 31-year-old Ruonan Yao was crossing West End Avenue in a crosswalk with the green “walk” signal when the dump truck, driven by 58-year-old Ken Cathey of Ashland City made a right turn from 31st Avenue South and hit her.

Cathey told police he did not see the woman when he made the turn.

Officials say the contributing factor to the crash appears to be Cathey’s failure to yield the right of way. As of now, it's unclear if charges will be filed.
