NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — More and more people working from home during the COVID-19 pandemic are taking up walking, which can actually deepen your connection to faith, according to Christian author Mark Buchanan.

In his book "God Walk: Walking At The Speed Of Your Soul," Mark Buchanan describes walking to be a spiritual experience.

The book is available for purchase July 14.

"Each chapter describes some dimension of what goes on with walking," said Mark Buchanan. "The physical benefits, the coming into awareness of our surroundings, inside of us or the person around us or maybe the God above us."

In God Walk, Buchanan examines the Bible and the references to walking, including when Jesus said "come, follow me," or when Jesus was "on the way," "arriving," "leaving," "approaching" and "coming upon."

Although Buchanan acknowledges in the book that there isn't a corresponding physical discipline to Christianity, unlike in Hinduism with yoga, walking may be the closest thing to it.

Buchanan has seen more people walking during the pandemic, and mentioned in an interview with NewsChannel5's Hannah McDonald that people are likely connecting more or becoming more mindful of their environment.

"There is a sense that is slows you down and it forces you to pay attention. I've seen an enormous increase of walking in our community and with that people are saying 'oh, I live beside you?' 'Look at this beautiful garden. Maybe we should get out in the garden and do something like that.'"
