A  road crew from Putnam County was shot at multiple times while trimming trees along a public road, forcing the seven men to take cover behind their heavy machinery.

"I've been here 28 years and I've been cussed at but when a gun starts shooting that's a different story," said Joe Trobaugh, foreman for the crew that came under fire on Tuesday.

Joe and his men were trimming back branches from a willow tree Tuesday which was creating sight problems for busses along Water Plant Road in Baxter.

As the men loaded branches into a wood chipper they noticed the woman, later identified as Anna Peace, standing on her front porch with a riffle pointed at them.

"You could hear the shots but I couldn't tell how many. We were fortunate no one got killed by a stray bullet," he added.

The crew hid behind a dump truck and wood chipper as they waited for the Putnam County Sheriff's Department to arrive.

Eventually, Anna Peace was arrested and charged with aggravated assault. A judge set the 52-year-old's bond at $50,000.

"It's not fair to put them in that kind of position," said Putnam County Highway Department Supervisor Randy Jones.

"I'm just thankful no one was hurt," he added.
