An elderly woman was killed in a house fire in Coffee County.

Authorities said the fire happened just before 1 a.m. Thursday at a home in the 600 block of Wimbley Road in Estill Springs.

Reports stated Michael Cook lived in the home with his mother, 79-year-old Sara Ruth Cook.

Michael told officials he discovered the fire when he returned home from Manchester.

Michael and his sister, Mary Frances Cook Jones, found their mother in the floor. Emergency crews were able to pull their mother from the home, but discovered she had passed away in the fire.

Her body was taken to the medical examiner’s office in Nashville for an autopsy.

An investigation into the cause of the fire remained ongoing by Tennessee Bomb and Arson and the Coffee County Sheriff’s Department.
