A mid-state woman has been forced to bury her son and husband after Tuesday's deadly crash on I-65.
The accident happened at mile-marker 102 near Millersville early Tuesday morning.
Cathy Swank was at work when she heard about the accident. She said she kept trying her son and husband's cell phones but no one ever answered the calls.
"I just knew something was up," Swank said. "I just knew."
A short time later, Swank's other son and two Tennessee Highway Patrolmen showed up to her office. She quickly realized her worst thoughts had become reality.
"The the two troopers climbed out of the car, and then I knew," Swank said. "I just didn't know how bad."
Officials said Gerald Swank and his stepson, Michael Walz, were killed instantly when Mary Dawson crashed into the median and crossed into on-coming traffic hitting the two. Dawson was also killed.
The widow now wants the state to do more.
"I'm just angry," she said. "That is a bad corner up there. Coming off the ridge, I couldn't begin to tell you how fast people are going."
Swank also wants the Tennessee Department of Transportation to install wire guardrails in the median.
TDOT said, however, the area is too wide for the wires. Department officials said they want to wait until the formal investigation into the crash is complete before deciding whether to make any safety changes.
"Once the report is made available TDOT will review and determine if additional safety measures need to be implemented," Kathryn Schulte, Communications Relations Director said in a statement Wednesday.
Figures released to News Channel 5 from the Tennessee Highway Patrol show Tuesday's fatal crash was the first one since 2012, where four people were killed.
For the mother and wife, she hopes she can spark change during a period of immense tragedy.
"I just want something done," Swank said. "It's too late for my husband and my son, but maybe we could save someone else's husband and son."
It's still unclear what caused Dawson to crash into the median.
