Wofford LB Roach Released From Tennessee Hospital

Posted

Wofford linebacker Michael Roach was released from a Tennessee hospital after he collapsed on the sideline in the third quarter of his team's victory over Tennessee Tech.

Roach was diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a condition that thickens the heart walls and can inhibit blood flow. He said that condition had not been previously detected. He had a cardioverter defibrillator implanted in his heart Friday.

Roach said he went into cardiac arrest on Wofford's sideline and for 45 seconds had no pulse and was not breathing. He was with the defense on a 13-play Tennessee Tech drive and felt his heart beating very fast, but was told it was not pumping blood.

He said athletic trainers and doctors who revived him "were in the right place at the right time."
