Three people have died in a crash in Macon County on State Route 52.
The wreck happened in the westbound lanes between Leath Lane and Old Highway 52 around 5:55 p.m. Saturday.
Those with the Tennessee Highway Patrol said a tractor trailer, driven by 41-year-old Christopher L. Brady, of Moss, lost control during heavy rain while attempting to make a left turn. That caused the trailer to swing out and slide sideways into oncoming traffic.
Troopers said two trucks could not stop. One of them, driven by 46-year-old Jeffrey A. Van Overberge, of Westmoreland, slid under the trailer. The second truck, driven by 28-year-old Jay R. Scruggs, of Westmoreland, struck the rear of the trailer.
Reports stated the tractor trailer came to rest overturned in a deep ravine.
The tractor trailer driver, Brady, died at the scene. Authorities confirmed Overberge and his passenger, identified as 25-year-old Justin L. Spears, of Westmoreland, also passed away at the scene.
Scruggs was taken to Skyline Medical Center for his injuries. Officials said he was also cited for driving on a suspended license.
Authorities said the roadway was closed to westbound traffic while crews worked at the scene. Drivers in both directions of traffic were diverted to alternate routes.
