Posted

A tractor trailer has overturned on Interstate 40 in Smith County.

Officials said the wreck happened around 2:18 p.m. Sunday in the eastbound lanes of the interstate near mile marker 251.

Those with the Tennessee Department of Transportation said the right lane was blocked to eastbound drivers. Westbound traffic was not affected.

According to preliminary reports, 51-year-old Jean Barry Essig, of Pennsylvania, was driving the tractor trailer when it ran off the shoulder of the road into a ravine and overturned.

Essig was taken to the VA hospital in Nashville for his injuries. His condition was unknown.

Officials said the tractor trailer was hauling roofing materials.

Crews estimated the roadway would not be cleared until midnight.
