ATHENS, Tenn. (AP) - The Tennessee Highway Patrol says a teen told them his brakes failed leading to a crash with a church van that sent 14 people to hospitals.
According to media reports, the wreck happened in McMinn County on Thursday morning as the van carried 11 children ages 4-8 to a day camp at Zion Hill Baptist Church in Englewood.
THP Lt. Bill Miller said 18-year-old Zachery Crager of Decatur told officers he crashed into the van, which also had two adults aboard, when his brakes failed.
Miller said Crager, an adult van passenger and a child were taken to the University of Tennessee Hospital in Knoxville. Others were treated and released from local hospitals. All were expected to recover.
Miller said Crager would be cited for failing to maintain his vehicle.
