Additional woman charged in death of elderly man found in burned home

LEWISBURG, Tenn. (WTVF) — A second woman has been arrested in connection with the death of a 74-year-old man in Lewisburg that occurred a little over a week ago.

Police arrested an 18-year-old woman on homicide charges after the body of a man was discovered in the home that was engulfed in flames. Now Kristina Young, 33, has been charged in connection with the homicide.

The fire was reported before midnight on Wednesday at 543 Second Avenue in Lewisburg.

When firefighter arrived at the scene they discovered the house was fully engulfed in flames. Inside, once the fire was extinguished, the crew located the remains of 74-year-old Malcolm Garrett.

It was determined shortly after the recovery of the body that the fire and the death appeared to be the result of a homicide. According to police, Garrett appeared to have been doused in accelerate before he was set on fire.

Investigators say that several facts led them to the identification of the suspect, 18-year-old Alyssa Hutt.

Statements made by Hutt while she was being questioned by police resulted in her arrest. She is currently being held at the Marshall County Detention Facility in Lewisburg on a $310,000 bond.

Both women are being charged with Criminal Homicide and Especially Aggravated Robbery. In addition, Young has also been charged with Aggravated Arson.
