Councilman Wants To End Public Urination Problem In East Nashville

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A proposed ordinance to deal with a messy situation in East Nashville got its first review at Metro Council Tuesday night.

Councilman Scott Davis said he wants to stop drunk homeless people from urinating in public near some trendy east Nashville condos and shops. Over the past year or so, several offenders have been caught on video and in pictures relieving themselves on or near buildings in the area.

Davis said it often happens after they purchase alcohol from a convenience store located on 5th and Main Street.

Davis' bill would ban any store from selling beer in single cans or bottles if they're within 100 feet of a place that serves food to homeless people, and there happens to be such a place next door to that convenience store.

Davis something has to be done about the public urination problem soon.

“How would you feel if you're sitting on the back of a patio relaxing with your family, and a gentleman drops his trousers?” Davis said. “I mean party's over, it just ruins your whole night.”

A manager at the Citgo convenience story says they have hired their own security to deal with the problem, which they say is as frustrating for them as it is for Councilman Davis.  They say they've also scheduled additional staff to watch out for the homeless people, whom they say also steal from the store. They say if they catch any employee selling beer to an intoxicated person, that employee can be fired.
