NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Fire damage from a suspected meth lab explosion has become a big headache for customers with property stored at the CubeSmart Self Storage building in West Nashville.

In July, one person died during an apparent meth lab explosion at the building. It’s been months, and Kelly Sigler said nearly all her belongings are trapped in the storage building on Robertson Avenue. She's a travel nurse in the process of building a house, so that's why her belongings are in storage.

"So right off the bat things like sofas, mattresses, upholstered furniture, any of that stuff has to go which is understandable. I mean it’s also been sitting there in a building that’s had smoke for three plus months now," Sigler said.

Kelly is upset because she wants to retrieve her mementos and jewelry from her grandmother.

"I think if we just have the opportunity to get to our stuff, there’s definitely a chance that some of these things that are real important, can be safely salvaged," she said.

Currently, the Metro Nashville Police Department has quarantined the 115-unit building since there's fire damage. This comes after they got wind of the company's plan to let customers inside their units without cleaning up first.

"So there was a plan in place where we were going to be required to purchase all our own essentially HAZMAT gear," said Sigler.

Police want professionals to make sure the building is cleaned up, and chemical-free before customers check on their things. Meanwhile, customers like Kelly are left frustrated. She plans on seeking legal counsel on the situation.

“I think this could have been over and done with twice around if they had just gotten the decontamination people in there, cleaned the building, and send us on our way," she said.
