NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — A Storm 5 Alert has been issued ahead of a cold front that's expected to bring the threat of strong to severe storms to Middle Tennessee today.

We'll see highs in the mid to upper 90s with the heat index between 105-110 degrees. A Heat Advisory is in effect for Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky. West Tennessee is under an Excessive Heat Warning, where the feels like could top 110 degrees.

In Wilson County, the sheriff's office is asking drivers to be cautious around the Coles Ferry Pike and Cairo Bend Road area after a tree fell across the roadway. Another tree completely fell over the roadway in the 1400 block of Old Hunters Point Pike.

Update from Meteorologist Henry Rothenberg:

With the heat in place, a cold front will push our way during the afternoon and evening. This will trigger scattered showers and thunderstorms.

A few of the storms could be strong to severe.

The primary threat will be damaging winds, small hail and heavy downpours. The heavy rain could lead to localized flooding.

Behind the front, it'll still be hot for the second half of the week, but the humidity levels will be lower.
