EAST NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — An attempted robbery ended with the murder of a beloved market clerk in East Nashville.
A memorial has grown outside of East Nashville's Danial market. Maged Ghaly, 49, was known as "Mike" to his customers - customers he treated like family, with his generosity.
"He would just give them what they need," said his daughter Carien Riad. "There was this one lady who would come in with her kids and wouldn't have enough money and he'd just give it to them."
Carien Riad, 18, says her father moved from Egypt to Middle Tennessee to build a better life for her and her 15-year-old brother. He owned and worked at the store for about five years.
Investigators say Ghaly was working behind the counter early Saturday morning when he was shot and killed in an attempted robbery.
"He died the second he was shot because he was shot in the neck," said Riad.
Jerome Knight Junior is in jail, charged with criminal homicide and attempted especially aggravated robbery. He will be in court Tuesday morning.
