An elderly woman was killed Thursday morning when fire broke out inside a Cheatham County residence. Another person was hurt.
The incident happened around 1 a.m. at a small building behind a home on Bradley Street in Pleasant View.
The fire began in the victim’s stand-alone structuree. She has been identified by family members as Lula Phillips.
Phillips' daughter said a candle was left lit on the front porch and the house went up in flames quickly.
The victim was located about four or five feet from the door.
The victim's grandson was injured trying to get in from the outside to rescue her. He was taken to the burn center at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He had a laceration to his arm.
"When they found her, she was laying on the floor. She was trying to get to the door," said Teresa Hester, the victim's daughter.
The exact cause of the fire was unknown, but it wasn't immediately considered to be suspicious.
Officials with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the Tennessee State Fire Department were called to investigate.
A gofundme account has been started to help Phillips' family with expenses.
