Family Fights Insurance Company Decision For Daughter's Physical Therapy

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. -- A Brentwood family says they're at the end of their rope after being denied coverage by their insurance company three times for treatments they say their 17-year old daughter needs.

The family says they even went in front of an insurance board to fight the decision.

Their 17 year-old daughter, Savannah Bustos has CIDP, a nervous system disorder that progressively weakens sensitivity.

Right now, Savannah is confined to a wheelchair which their insurance has paid for, along with her prescriptions.

But Savannah's parents say their insurance company capped the number of physical therapy treatments she can receive, and her doctors say that is the kind of treatment she really needs or she could become permanently disabled.

Recently her father, who is a doctor himself, traveled to Chattanooga to appear in front of an insurance appeal board after being denied coverage twice, and they were denied a third time.

For now, Savanah's parents have taken her out of physical therapy treatments until they can find a way to afford them with or without insurance.

“This is a last resort, absolutely,” Savannah’s mother Lori said. “When they denied us the last time, we thought, ’What can we do next, what can we do?’”

Her family hopes -- with the right physical therapy -- Savannah may be able to walk again.
