Back in 1992, two teens dropped a 50-pound boulder off the Rocky Fork I-24 overpass in Smyrna., and it hit a car driven by 22-year-old Desert Storm Marine Larry Hazelwood. The impact killed him.
Nearly 27 years later, his sister Lara is still haunted by that day, especially when news of a strikingly similar crime broke Tuesday. Police are still trying to find who they say likely threw a chunk of concrete from the Shelby avenue bridge Tuesday -- killing Joe C. Shelton, Jr. and devastating his family.
In the past year, Lara has been working with state lawmakers, trying to get TDOT money to put up fences along highway overpasses, so this doesn't happen anymore.
