MADISON, Tenn. (WTVF — New details in the case of a woman who was found stabbed to death in the stairwell of a Madison apartment complex suggest that she and the suspect were involved in a prior relationship.

Ashley Yarbrough's family now wants justice after their loved one was brutally murdered.

Monday night Metro Police responded to a gruesome crime scene at the Neely's Bend condominiums.

Linda Byrd said, "There was blood everywhere, and just feeling what she possibly went through... it was a heinous crime, it was relentless."

Linda Byrd's niece died at the hospital after police say she was stabbed multiple times.

Kirsty Geary, the victim's ex-girlfriend, was arrested for her murder.

Byrd said, "She had no remorse for her life almost as if it was trash to toss out, no consideration that she has a 5-year-old daughter at home and a family that loved her dearly, and she was going to school and was going to change her life so her and her daughter can have a wonderful life together."

Byrd said Yarbrough broke up with the suspect on Saturday.

Byrd said, "She stated that the girl was scary, possessive, mentally controlling, physically abusive."

Byrd said there could be several motives for the murder. After the break-up, Yarbrough moved in with the suspect's ex-girlfriend. Her niece also met with an attorney on an unrelated legal matter that may have lead to the altercation.

Byrd said, "I feel like it was probably not just a crime of passion, but also to make sure that my niece would not talk to testify."

As police proceed with the investigation, Byrd said her family is trying to pick up the pieces.

Byrd said, "I just need to have justice for her."

There's a Go Fund Me page to help the victim's daughter as well as pay for funeral expenses. If you would like to donate, the link is here.

Geary is expected in court at 9:55a.m. on Friday for her criminal homicide charge.
