Friday marks one year since a Blue Angels jet practicing for the Great Tennessee Air show crashed in Smyrna.

Marine Captain Jeff Kuss was killed on June 2, 2016 while practicing in Smyrna for the Pensacola, Florida-based flight demonstration team.

The crash happened the day before the Great Tennessee Air Show.

The 32-year-old ejected from the plane, but it was too late. A Navy report on the incident cited weather and fatigue as contributing factors to the crash.

Captain Kuss was known for his dedication and love of flying. He left behind a wife and two young children.

The city of Smyrna has announced plans to create a memorial for him at Lee Victory Recreation Park. Organizers have already raised half of the $1 million cost.
