Waffle House shooting hero James Shaw Jr. was recognized during Nashville Mayor David Briley’s State of Metro address.
Shaw and his friend, Brennan "BJ" McMurry, were both present during Friday’s address.
“It’s been really, really busy. It’s been a whirlwind,” Shaw said.
When asked about his recent appearance on “Ellen,” Shaw said he wants to focus on bringing awareness to mental health.
“We want the victims to be remembered but we want positivity to come out of this also,” he added.
Both Shaw and McMurry also commented on Thursday's fatal shooting at Opry Mills.
“No one should have to go through that. Period,” McMurry said “And the fact that we’re going through a similar situation in our community two weeks after [the Waffle House shooting] is heartbreaking to say the least.”
