A student at Maryville College in East Tennessee has been charged with murder in the shooting death of a 16-year-old girl.
According to the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, 18-year-old William Riley Gaul was taken into custody late Tuesday night.
He’s been charged with first degree murder in the death of Emma Walker, a student at Central High School in Knoxville.
Investigators said Walker was found dead Monday morning from a gunshot wound inside her home on Cardindale Drive.
Evidence at the scene indicated someone fired into her bedroom while she slept, officials said.
Gaul was arrested at 11 p.m. in an apartment parking lot in Knoxville. He was held on a $750,000 bond.
Detectives said Gaul was under surveillance because they believed he was preparing to destroy evidence related to the homicide.
