A tree nearly crushed a family who was asleep in their downtown Franklin home.
“About 7:45 this morning [Thursday], just as my alarm goes off, I heard this pop, crash, and the whole house just shook,” Chuck Ingram said.
Ingram said their 11-year-old and two teenagers were asleep.
“I was like, 'Oh my gosh! Please nothing be wrong with my son.' About that time he ran downstairs, he was okay, but I mean it literally took the front corner of the house off. It shifted the front porch, and now it’s laying on the neighbor’s house as well," Ingram said.
The tree fell four feet from the master bedroom where Chuck was with his wife, Mandy.
“My head is right there basically where the gutter is, my son’s room is upstairs, his feet are on this end. So it was a close call for us,” Ingram said.
They moved into their home 16 years ago. It was built in the 1900's, so they spent years refurbishing it.
Ingram believed strong winds brought it down.
“The city arborist came out and said this is not the same tree. It’s two separate trees, the rain gets down in it and softens it up and made the roots weak,” Ingram said.
A family friend with Midsouth Mulch and Outdoor Services came out to clean up the mess.
“My wife and I are good friends with them, so my wife pretty much said get your butt over there!” Lance Stockard said.
The city removed part of the tree that fell onto the roadway around 8 a.m. Thursday.
