As construction on the state capitol's cupola continues, the story behind the father and son renovations that span 60 years unfolds.
The previous renovation of the building were in 1957, when Jack Lee's company, Rock City renovated both the inside and outside of the capitol, including the spire on top, called a cupola. Now, Jack's son, John leads the charge as the president of Rocky City Construction. The work is less this time around, but the renovations on the cupola are something the renovations share in common.
"A cupola is an architectural term for lack of a better term, a little house on top of the roof," said John. "They vary in size from big one to little ones, the one on our capitol, I would say, is an intermediate sized one."
Likely the most iconic part of the capitol, it can be seen from various spots throughout Nashville and has sat on top of a hill overlooking the city since it was constructed in 1840.
"The only function that it serves is to raise and lower the flag when the legislature is in session," said John.

Rock City Construction are so pleased to be a part of both projects, they changed their logo to represent the cupola for their 100 year anniversary.

John said they have taken great pride in their work, especially with the cupola. He said he remembers visiting the construction site during the previous renovations in the 50s.
"I remember in the summers, when I guess my mother was tired of putting up with me, she would send me to work with my dad. We would usually come up here," John said.
The work is expected to finish by the next legislative session, which starts the first of 2018.
