NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Metro police officers will begin issuing citations to those who violate Nashville’s mask order.

Hugh Atkins, Environmental Health Bureau director, said the Metro Public Health Department is working with the Metro Nashville Police Department on coordinating the effort.

Atkins said officers will be handing out information to those who violate the city’s mask order, which requires facial coverings to be worn in indoor and outdoor public spaces. However, he said officers will begin issuing citations at some point.

Anyone who violates the order could face a civil or criminal penalty, including a Class C Misdemeanor and a fine up to $50. The order also requires businesses to post signage at their entrances stating all employees, customers and visitors must wear masks.

Last week, Mayor John Cooper announced the city would revert to a modified Phase Two plan after a surge of cases.
