Officer John Anderson honored at hockey fundraiser for MACC

ANTIOCH, TN. (WTVF)- — An annual hockey fundraiser for homeless animals also honors the life of fallen Metro Police Officer John Anderson. The third annual Shelter Cup raises money for Metro Animal Care and Control, otherwise known as MACC. Over the last three years, the Shelter Cup tournament and Paw Classic has raised more than $10,000 for MACC.

Metro Police Officer John Anderson was a familiar face here at Ford Ice Center, even participating in the very first Shelter Cup.

"John was a kind hearted man and anyone who plays in this has a big heart ," said Jeff Mendolla, the Shelter Cup founder.

The fallen hero died Thursday in a crash while on duty. This year they did things a bit different to honor Officer Anderson. Before each game, they had a moment of silence and also hung up his jersey. His parents, 18 month old son and mother of his child was in attendance.

All 80 local hockey players donated their proceeds from their entry fee to MACC.

Funeral services for Officer Anderson will be held Monday at Cornerstone Church off West Old Hickory Boulevard in Madison, TN. Visitation will be from 9 to 11:30 am, with the service at 1 pm.
