Plans for Montgomery County event center move ahead as commissioners approve funding for property

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Plans for an event center in downtown Clarksville have moved forward. Montgomery County commissioners voted Monday night, approving funding for the purchase of property where the event center would go.

In a 16-4 vote with one abstention, the Montgomery County Commission approved the issuance of $7.5 million of general obligation bonds.

The money from those bonds is to be used for the purchase of property located at Second and College Streets downtown. It's at this site Montgomery County Mayor Jim Durrett hopes to build the Clarksville Multipurpose Event Center.

Mayor Durrett first proposed his plans for the event center in April. The county commission approved the purchase of land for the event center in May.

The estimated cost for the building of the event center is $105 million. Mayor Durrett has said he hopes the event center will open fall 2021.
